Xi Lin Men: Approaching Happiness

An Innovative Alcohol Beverage Package

A message about "happiness" is delivered through the design of Xi Lin Men. The transparent bottle allows the limpid liquid to be seen clearly, while a relief of two Yin-Yang fish can be observed at the bottom when the bottle is viewed from a 45-degree angle. The fish, symbolizing "happiness" and "riches," are positioned head to tail, representing harmony. The red dot on the fish's forehead signifies "lucky strike" in Chinese culture. The bottle cap, designed to resemble bamboo, symbolizes progress and the desire to forge ahead.

The main design style of Xi Lin Men is simplicity, setting it apart from other products on the market. The fish relief is created using a frosting technique, giving the design a three-dimensional appearance. The red dots on the fish's forehead are made using thermal transfer printing technology, adding a touch of vibrancy to the overall design.

The Xi Lin Men alcohol beverage package measures 150mm in width, 150mm in depth, and 290mm in height. Its unique design elements make it easily identifiable and suitable for happy occasions such as weddings and celebrations.

The concept behind Xi Lin Men is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, particularly the "Tai Chi" and "Yin Yang" philosophy. This design represents the pursuit of happiness and respect for nature, bringing good luck and wealth to those who embrace it.

The Xi Lin Men project began in August 2019 and was completed in May 2020 in Shenzhen, China. Throughout the design process, Xu Yao and Li Wei conducted extensive research on the concept of "happiness" in Chinese culture. They initially considered using the Chinese Dragon as the main motif but ultimately chose fish for its relatability and ability to convey a clear message of luck, hope, and freedom.

Overcoming technical challenges, the designers successfully created a relief sculpture on the vertical surface of the bottle's bottom. This achievement is a testament to their dedication and the rarity of such designs in the market today.

The Xi Lin Men alcohol beverage package has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
